NATURAL HISTORY ART CONTEST 2026
Act 69 of 2024 declares October of each year as the Natural History Month of the Archipelago of Puerto Rico, with the purpose of promoting knowledge of our natural heritage, fostering science education and inspiring new generations to explore the sciences. It also recognizes the importance of paleontology and of museums for understanding and sharing the natural history of Puerto Rico.
The museum’s founder and president, Maribel Ramirez, brought the proposal to Representative José “Che” Pérez, who championed the legislative measure together with Representative Wilson Román. The effort relied on the advice and review of the scientific content by paleontologists Dr. Jorge Vélez-Juarbe and Dr. Hernán Santos, members of the museum’s Board of Directors. This collaboration between the museum, the scientific community and the Legislature established an annual celebration dedicated to the knowledge and appreciation of Puerto Rico’s natural heritage.
The art contest, in collaboration with the Department of Education, is part of a month of celebration, educational initiatives and activities that showcase the natural history of the archipelago of Puerto Rico, from its geological origins nearly 175 million years ago to the richness of its biodiversity and the ecosystems that distinguish us today.
